Professor Xuhua He was a gold medalist at the 1996 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Peking University in 2001 and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2005. Following his doctorate, he was a Member at the Institute for Advanced Study (2005-2006) and then a Simons Instructor at Stony Brook University (2006-2008). He joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2008, where he served as Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor until 2014. From 2014 to 2019, he was a Full Professor of Mathematics at the University of Maryland. During this period, he also held the Von Neumann Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study (2016-2017) and was a Simons Visiting Professor at Université Paris Nord in May 2017. He was appointed the Choh-Ming Li Professor of Mathematics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2019, a position he held until 2023, when he joined The University of Hong Kong as a Chair Professor of Mathematics.

Professor He works in pure mathematics. His research focuses on arithmetic geometry, algebraic groups, and representation theory. His significant contributions have been recognized with several major awards, including the Morningside Gold Medal in Mathematics (2013), the Xplorer Prize (2020), the Chevalley Prize of the American Mathematical Society (2022), and the New Cornerstone Investigator Award (2023). He was an invited speaker at the Current Development of Mathematics conference in 2015 and an invited sectional speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in 2018. He further contributed to the ICM as a core member of the sectional panel for the 2022 congress. Professor He was elected a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2025. He currently serves as the President of the Hong Kong Mathematical Society.
