Prof Charles Kuen Kao was known as the “Father of Fibre Optics”, “Father of Fibre Optic Communications” and “Godfather of Broadband” to acknowledge his groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication, which was instrumental to the explosive development of the age of the Internet.
To recognise his achievement, he received numerous awards, including the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009, Japan Prize in 1996 and the IEEE’s Alexander Graham Bell Medal in 1985.
Prof Kao was an electrical engineer and a physicist. He was the Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1987 to 1996.
Prof Kao was awarded Honorary Member of The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences in 2015.
