University Distinguished Professor
City University of Hong Kong
Prof Ciarlet is an internationally renowned mathematician, particularly for his work in the mathematical analysis of the finite element method and his fundamental contributions to elasticity theory, plate theory, shell theory, and applied differential geometry.
Prof Ciarlet obtained his Ph.D from Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland in Ohio in 1966. Returning to Paris, he took up the appointment as the Head of the Department of Mathematics, Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées. His study earned him a higher doctorate in 1971. In 1974, he joined the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris as a Professor until 2002, when he became a University Distinguished Professor at the City University of Hong Kong. Prof Ciarlet’s research interests include numerical analysis, finite element methods, partial differential equations, applied differential geometry, mathematical modeling in three-dimensional elasticity, plate and shell theories. In addition to having published more than 200 research papers, he has also written seventeen books, including well known ones such as “The Finite Element Method for Elliptic Problems”, “Introduction to Numerical Linear Algebra and Optimisation”, “Mathematical Elasticity”, and “Linear and Nonlinear Functional Analysis with Applications”.
In addition to being a member of many national academies, Prof Ciarlet has received several awards among which: the Poncelet Prize and the Jaffé Prize from the French Academy of Sciences, the Gold Medal from the University of Santiago de Compostela, the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award and the Shanghai Prize for International Cooperation in Science and Technology. He has also been made Doctor Honoris Causa or Honorary Professor by thirteen universities.
