Prof Dennis Lo, Founding Member of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, has been named the “Top 20 Translational Researchers of 2019” by the world-renowned scientific journal Nature Biotechnology. Prof Lo received the honour for his achievements in the areas of cancer and fetal diagnostics. Prof Lo is ranked fourth on the list. It is the fourth consecutive year for Prof Lo to receive this honour.
Prof Lo is the Director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, Associate Dean (Research) and Chairman of the Department of Chemical Pathology of Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Following his discovery of fetal DNA in maternal plasma, Prof Lo developed non-invasive DNA based prenatal diagnostic testing, which has been widely used in over 90 countries and used by over 7 million pregnant women worldwide. This scientific achievement lays the foundation for developing non-invasive tests for cancer detection based on similar scientific principles.
