Prof Fan Sheung Tat is currently the Director of Liver Surgery Centre, Department of Surgery at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital and Emeritus Professor of Department of Surgery, The University of Hong Kong. Professor Fan graduated from The University of Hong Kong in 1976. He started his academic career in 1987 as Lecturer in the Department of Surgery, The University of Hong Kong, and was appointed to Chair Professor of Surgery in 1993.

Prof Fan was Chief of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital from January 1988 to June 2008. In 1991, Prof Fan performed the first successful liver transplant in Hong Kong. In 1996, he pioneered the technique of adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation using a right liver graft. This innovative procedure helped ease the continuing problem of organ shortage in adult patients. The operation is now widely adopted and is regarded as a major breakthrough in the history of liver transplantation.

Fellow of four surgical colleges and holder of four doctorate degrees, Prof Fan researches and publishes extensively on diseases that are commonly seen in Asia, namely, hepatocellular carcinoma, hepatitis B, cirrhosis, intrahepatic stones, and acute biliary pancreatitis. He authored more than 773 articles to date. According to the Scientist Ranking in ISI Essential Science Indicators, he ranks among the top 1% of scientists in Clinical Medicine by citations in the world.

In 2001, Prof Fan was accorded the highest research accolade, the Distinguished Research Achievement Award, by The University of Hong Kong for his academic achievement. In 2005, Professor Fan and his team were awarded the First Class Award in the category of State Scientific and Technological Progress Award in the State Science and Technology Awards of China. In the same year, he was elected as Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering under the category of Medical and Health Engineering. In 2006, he was awarded a Silver Bauhinia Star by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for his academic leadership and contribution to the liver transplant service in Hong Kong. In 2008, he was awarded the TTS-Genzyme Award for Innovation in Surgery and Technology by The Transplantation Society.
